Such beautiful truths to highlight. I also had to do some serious de-brief on Everything Sad, and am still dying to talk about the whole thing. Partially I want to deep dive into the literary analysis piece (the craft is amazing) but I'm also amazed at how much truth is packed into it. Did you listen to the Close Reads interview with Daniel Nayeri? It was so, so good. He had this section about memoir and story, and not being self aggrandizing that made me love the book even more. When he talked about how protective he is of young readers, I wanted to cheer. I think that's so much of what is missing in more contemporary books -- we feel the need to shove the "truth" as this disembodied principle down kid's throats but we miss the story that would make the truth actually matter to them. I think Madelein L'Engle has a whole section about this too in Walking on Water where she talks about how a student wants to know when they're going to learn how to write children's books, and she says they're learning how to write.
You are showing bravery....I pray you are blessed even as you seek the good of your children.
Praying and asking His care daily.
The passages in bold feel like medicine. Thanks for this missive 💛
