Little Women week 7
Chapter 29- Chapter 33: Calling cards, letters, and tender troubles
Hello Readers!
This week, February 24th to March 3rd, we’re reading Chapter 29 (Calls) to Chapter 33 (Jo’s Journal).
Readers- no spoilers, but there is sibling DRAMA in this section. Also, a very interesting exploration of when one should care about society, and when one should ignore social conventions. When is one being a free-thinking independent person, and when is one just being rude? Does society have any claim on us? This is an interesting discussion given Alcott’s own family upbringing - they were very unconventional!
Second reason to love this section: Letters. I LOVE epistolary novels. Next to that, I love diary novels. Basically, dialogue and characters are my favorite parts of books, and when you get to read a letter, it’s like getting a really long monologue and I love it. It’s so fun seeing the character’s personalities come through in their style of speech, and in the facts they include and the facts they leave out, and all that is left for us to read between the lines. - Enjoy!
I've been thinking about how "Bhaer-y" the journal is. I don't buy that Bhaer was a late or 'perverse' addition. And I'm very happy about that.
